A Closer Look at the Blue Building on the Corner<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Last issue we met the grocer. This time we’re taking a tour of the place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feylight Grocery’s bigger than it looks on the outside. There’s a section for just about anything you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Item of the Day:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tucked beside the front counter sits a wooden platform with a sign that reads: ITEM OF THE DAY<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s how it works. Every day, one featured item from one Feylight business goes on sale. Could be a toaster from Redford’s Appliance. Could be something handmade from Bart’s Carpentry shop. Could be a coveted glazed ceramic flower pot from The Garden Key Florist shop. Could be a bag of potatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only way to find out what the item of the day is? Walk in and check. Yarbo’s not gonna tell. He doesn’t want a line around the corner for one item! Mayhem! He’s still haunted by the great PeaPod Babies craze from 20 years ago. He won’t be making that mistake again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kitchen:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toward the back, the floor switches from creaky wood to checkered tile with bright blue accent wall. The kitchen is small \u2014 sandwiches, snacks, hot drinks. The bread comes from the Sweet P’s bakery across the street, fresh every morning. Next to the kitchen, coffee’s always on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most days after school, Thadeus, Yarbo’s 16-year-old son, can be found back here \u2014 running the kitchen, or pretending to stock shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dry Goods:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dry goods section is where Yarbo spends most his time organizing. Sacks of flour and rice on the lower shelves. Jars stacked above \u2014 some with faded labels from when Yarbo was still just a teen. Some with no labels at all. Yarbo knows what’s in each jar. It’s his system, and it works\u2026 as long as you’re not shy about asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Braids of cured garlic and onions hang from the thick wooden posts. Bundles of herbs spice up the wall with color. Dried flowers, leaves, roots, bark, seeds, buds, and pressed oils. Whatever you’re cooking, the secret ingredient is on a shelf in here somewhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aisles:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The far side goes modern. Pendant lights. Checkered floors. Refrigerated cases humming. Pet food, cleaning supplies, cereal, snacks, juice boxes \u2014 the stuff every household needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Counter:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The check-out counter sits at the front of the store. Cash register. Potted plant. Today’s newspaper open beside a fresh cup of black coffee. Balms, potions, salves \u2014 all of it made by people on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open tomorrow. Same time, same place. See ya there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
